Current Position: Full Professor at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, Portugal and Director of CIIMAR – Interdisciplinary Center of Marine and Environmental Centre.
Research activity and interest: Chief Strategy Officer – Agriculture – Fykia Biotech, a spin off of CIIMAR. Member of Scientific Council of the National Natural History Museum of France. Director of the Group of Blue Biotechnology and Health of CIIMAR.
Main research focuses on cyanobacteria secondary metabolites and their uses: toxins and molecules with biotechnological applications. Director of LEGE_CC- a culture collection comprising more than 2000 strains of cyanobacteria and microalgae – https://lege.ciimar.up.pt/. Published 540 papers in Biotechnology and Ecotoxicology and 7 patents on cyanobacteria natural products. Participated in more than 60 projects being at the moment coordinator of two H2020 projects: RISE and ERA Chair.
Director of the Doctoral Program in Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture (U Porto and U Minho) and the Master’s Degree in Toxicology and Environmental Contamination, having supervised more than 50 doctoral theses and 70 master’s theses. Project evaluator of the Innovation Agency and various international research funding institutions.
